The Great Crash of 08
This is a historical event in my life as a photographer and designer. It was tragic and devastating. Yet somehow I made it through.
This was the day my hard drive crashed.
How it happened, this is the story.
First off it was not my main laptop drive, but my external. Now you may ask, what is the big deal about a broken back up? Well simply because it was not a back up but main storage. This was because in my naivety I kept my 40+GB of music on my main drive and it took up the largest portion of my hard drive, and as a response to clear up space, I moved all my PSD’s, JPEGS, and other files of the like, to my external drive. And all was good.
However, due to its strategic location on my desk, my roommate was able to accidently knock it over while the disc was in use, as a result, it crashed and died a horrible death and I lost nearly 3 years worth of work.
Because of this loss, I spent the next 3 months in a moxie-less, artistic depression, so much so that I nearly refused to take my camera out of its case.
Examples of lost data:
- High School Year Book InDesign folders
- East Coast Trip
- 3ish Years of Photographic Work
- DES1 Final Project
I have since modified my storage procedure, I have 2 external hard drives. One is my main and is more of an extension of my hard drive, the other is a archive where I back up my laptop and my external drive.
